Imphal: A total of 11,133 houses were set on fire and 18,371 families were affected; 14,857 families are residing in relief camps and temporary shelters, said Manipur chief inister N. Biren Singh in the Assembly on Monday.
Biren was responding to a query moved by opposition MLA (Congress) K. Ranjit in a starred question during the 6th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The state Cabinet has decided to give a sum of Rs 1 lakh to each family as relief assistance whose houses were burnt in the ongoing Manipur violence, the chief minister informed the House.
So far Rs. 25,000 has been sanctioned to the respective deputy commissioners for 2,792 families. Nine of the affected families belonged to Imphal West, 115 to Imphal East, 512 to Bishnupur and 2,156 to Kangpokpi have received financial relief assistance, Biren said.
Out of the houses burnt down, 3,446 are fully verified, and financial relief assistance has been given to 2,792 families, he added.
Tne opposition MLA raised concerns about the variation in the numbers of affected families and houses burnt down in the violence. He also mentioned allegations of house owners not receiving financial relief assistance.
Biren said there are some issues regarding land ownership causing confusion in verifying some of the houses burnt down. For this reason relief was not given to all affected families. The remaining will be aided after verification, he added.
Replying to opposition MLA (Congress) Surjakumar Okram Biren stated that the number of male IDPs is 18,843, female IDPs – 21,245, male children – 12,977, and female children – 13,763.
The chief minister informed the House that the amount of funds released by the Government of India for IDPs till date was Rs. 225.54 crore. The amount utilized so far, including the state’s own contribution, was Rs. 377.07 crore.
Financial assistance of Rs 1,000 per person for clothing and personal belongings has been given four times to IDPs, Biren informed.
