Imphal: Vendors of Khwairamband Ima Keithel on Monday demonstrated at Imphal pressing the Parliament to take serious in Manipur crisis and put effort to restore peace in the turmoiling state.
Khwairamband Ima Keithel Coordinating Committee for Peace cautioned that the people of Manipur and the state itself will secede from the Indian Union if the government fails to bring a concrete solution to Manipur crisis at the earliest.
The women vendors took to the street in the city on the day first session of 18th Lok Sabha began, demanding immediate intervention of the Parliament.
The protest rally highlighted the urgency of addressing the almost 14 months long crisis in the state.
The protest began in the heart of Khwairamband Bazar, where a significant number of women vendors gathered.
The demonstrators planned to march towards Raj Bhawan and the chief minister’s bungalow.
Security forces foiled the attempt. The protest was intercepted near the western gate of Kangla Fort. The demonstrators turned back to Khwairamband Bazar and staged a sit-in in front of their respective market sheds.
They expressed their frustration and disappointment over the never-ending unrest in the state as Kuki attempt to break Manipur.
They strongly opposed Kuki-Zo’s demand for a separate administration or otherwise Kuki land by snatching Manipur land.
They voiced their concerns over the government’s plan to conduct mass combing operations ‘aiming to nab Meetei village defenders’.
The Peace committee co-convenor Huirem Binodini, lamented the apparent silence of elected legislators. “Our representatives fail to raise their voices for the people. It is a grave challenge to the avoided people living in fear and uncertainty.”
