The drivers narrated the grievances on the observation of the Drivers day organised by the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers’ & Motor Workers’ Union at ISBT, Chingmeirong. The gathering remembered those drivers who fall prey in the hands of the extortionists and died during bandh and blockades, and road accidents since 1978.
The gathering paid homage to 215 drivers who died serving the state despite of old odds.
Transport and Education gi commissioner K Lakshmikumar Singh, retired S.P Nagaland Police, P. Sonamani were present in the gathering.
Ex-president of ‘All Manipur Road Transport Drivers’ & Motor Workers’ Union B’, Nabachandra said the state government should curve away the blockade in the manner they audaciously created seven new districts. Drivers who are transporting the food grains and essential items faced death and injured during the blockade and the government should take it seriously.
Drivers don’t have enemy, the government keeps on saying that the disturbance along the highway is a cowardice act and the government will not remain silent. Instead of delivering the courageous slogan the government need to act actively, added Nabachandra.
Even if there code of conduct is prevalent steps can be taken up if the welfare of the drivers is taken seriously, said Nabachandra.
Talking to the media working president of the drivers union, S. Manglem said how can the drivers fight as warriors in the ambush war. We cannot accept the recent verdict of the union minister of home affairs and the state government that appropriate steps have been taken up to counter the blockade.
