Imphal: Over 500 acres of paddy farm that have been facing irrigation problem for the last many years will be solved this year, former Information Centre for Hill Areas, Manipur (ICHAM) president Nongthombam Rajendro said.
Amid the pandemic the farmers could produce more yields Rajendro said.
He was speaking during cleaning of Kongba river at Khundrakpam Mayai Leikai, Imphal East on Wednesday.
For the last many years farmers of the area especially the villagers of Haraorou, Tangkham and Sambei have been suffering due to improper irrigation system. They have been using the water of Kongba river for irrigation purpose however due to lack of maintenance of the river the farmers have been suffering throughout the season, he added.
To reduce the farmers suffering he started cleaning the river bed and its bank of total length about four and half kilometres. About three and half kilometre of the river has completed cleaning and about 1 kilometre is left, according to Rajendro.
The river will provide adequate water of irrigation and also will be able to control flood in the area, he added.
A farmer of Khundrakpam Mayai Leikai, Langpoklakpam Komol said the river was in natural condition and have been using the water for irrigation purposes. But due to lack of maintenance farmers of the area are suffering during the rainy season as the river failed to hold the water capacity and during dry season the river gets dry, he added.
He appreciated the present government for upgrading the paddy field side road into motorable road.
