Imphal: Manipur Police arrested a drug trafficker and seized opium worth Rs 4. 22 crore along with a cash of Rs 19. 85 lakh from his possession at Kanglatombi, Shantipur area on Friday.
Imphal West Police commandos, based on an information of presence of anti-social elements in the area conducted patrolling and checking. During the police operation one person in a suspicious manner was seen running inside a house on seeing the police, superintendent of police, Imphal West, K. Meghachandra told reporters, here on Saturday.
The person fell in the hands of the cops. On verification the person identified as Sandeep Limbu, 31, son of late Manbir Limbu of Erang Part-1, Dhoreghari, Senapati district. He is presently residing at Shantipur, Kanglatongbi.
The drive was conducted in continuation of the drive for ‘War on drugs’ initiated by the state government, the senior police officer said.
When the cops searched at his house and surrounding two gunny bags suspected to be containing some illegal items were found inside an EECO van that bore no registration plate. The van was found parked in front of the house. Sandeep told the police team that it contained some eatable items like rice, dal and vegetables, he added.
The police when checked the bags found 22 black packets of suspected opium weighing about 84.45 kilogram. Sandeep admitted that he is a drug dealer. He disclosed that the seized opium was given to him by one Premjit at Sekmai bazar on Friday afternoon and brought thr packets to his house by using his van. Sandeep also disclosed that he went to bazar area and collected a sum of Rs19.85 lakh on the same day from one unknown person as instructed by one Karan of Guwahati, the officer said.
He said Sandeep also disclosed that he had earlier transported opium five times.
The drug trafficker along with the seized items were handed over to Sekmai police station for further necessary action.
The police officer said Manipur Police have been able to seize huge amount of anti-social elements with the support from public. He appealed the public to inform police to avoid smuggling and using of anti-social drugs so that Manipur becomes a drug free state.
