Imphal: Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) intercepted consignment of Brown Sugar worth Rs 52 Lakh which was being ferried across Indo-Myanmar border through Chandel district on Friday.
Based on intelligence input regarding the smuggling of narcotics along Kana lok river, near village Khongtal, an operation was launched by the troops of Assam Rifles which led to interception of a Kenbo bike carrying 20 packets of Brown sugar. The recovered contraband and two apprehended individuals were handed over to Police station Chakpikarong for further legal action, the Assam Rifles said.
Assam Rifles is always committed to play a prominent role in establishing a drug free environment in Manipur, it added.
Tengnoupal Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(South) conducted an awareness campaign on “War on Drugs” on the same day.
The event was aimed at spreading awareness about drug abuse in the youth, wherein Dr Lenin and the other guest speakers shared their experience and wisdom with the people. Various dignitaries were invited to the event including the chief guest Brig A S Rana, Commander HQ 26 Sector, DC Tegnoupal and Chandel Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh, SP Tengnoupal Th. Vikramjit Singh, Dr Lenin Singh, Professor and Head psychiatry Dept RIMS was the guest speaker, Hijam Dineswar Singh chief functionary Kripa foundation and Bobo Ningthoukhongjam ex- drug user and social worker in drug related issues also contributed their valuable inputs, the Assam Rifles said.
All the village chiefs, representatives from SOO camp and representatives from various NGOs participated in the event.
The event culminated with a cultural programme by Khurai Kala Vidya Bhavan showcasing the cultural richness of Manipur.
Those in attendance expressed their gratitude towards Assam Rifles for taking such steps for the betterment of society and showed their enthusiasm for more such events in future, the Assam Rifles said.
