Imphal: Representatives of All Tribal Students Union, Manipur (ATSUM) and Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh came to an agreement on Sunday that led the student body to suspend in connection with the demand for holding Autonomous District Council elections.
Representatives of ATSUM met Biren at 11: 30 am at the chief minister’s office in presence of PHED, printing and stationery minister Losii Dikho, forest, environment and climate change, sericulture minister Awangbow Newmai and tribal affairs and hills, transport and GAD minister Vungzagin Vaite and deliberated on the ‘genuine’ demands of ATSUM for holding ADC elections expeditiously.
The meeting took note of the various issues involved in the context of the evolving scenario arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic, and also the related demand for creation of Autonomous District Councils (ADC) for the newly created districts from other stakeholders.
After thorough discussions, it was agreed that the State Cabinet will take a decision March end on the issue of conducting ADC elections and related matters, after consulting all stakeholders.
It was also decided to appoint ministers Losii and Vungzagin to coordinate with all concerned for the same.
Till March 31, ATSUM also agreed to suspend all forms of agitations in connection with the above issue.
The agreement was signed by Seiboi Haokip, president, ATSUM, SR Andria, general secretary, ATSUM and N. Geoffrey, secretary to chief minister of Manipur.
