DESAM imposes 17 hours general strike

Protesting against the allocation of the portfolio of parliamentary secretary (Minority and MOBC, commerce and industries) to Jiribam representative Ashab Uddin the Democratic Students’ Alliance Manipur (DESAM) has announced a 17 hours general strike which would begin at midnight tomorrow.
Talking to the reporters in Imphal, the general secretary of the students’ alliance Namerirakpam Edison DESAM said assigning the portfolio to a non- indigenous person was quite unfortunate for the people of the state while student bodies have been trying to save the indigenous people of Manipur. “Our agitation is against the inclusion of a non-indigenous people of the state in the state government formation”, said the secretary.
The student body demanded to withdraw the portfolio from the Jiribam representative and cautioned the government that the student body would spearhead stringent forms of agitation after the board exams if the government fails to comply with the demand.
The state government yesterday announced names of 12 MLAs who would hold different portfolios as parliamentary secretaries which included Ashab Uddin.
The student bodies of Qriental College and Standard College have extended their support to the agitation of DESAM.
