Imphal: Moreh Battalion Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR (South) foiled illegal smuggling of a large quantity of FCI Rice in Moreh on Thursday.
Acting on specific intelligence, Moreh Battalion launched a search operation in the area. During the operation, the troops recovered 119 bags of rice bags dumped in the thick jungle near the Indo-Myanmar border’ the Assam Rifles said in a statement released on Saturday.
On thorough checking it was revealed that the rice bags were of FCI origin which had been dumped in the area to be smuggled to Myanmar, it said.
The recovered commodity was handed over to Moreh Police for further investigation, it added.
Tengnoupal Battalion of Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(South) recovered smuggled goods from two vans in Tengnoupal at 10PM on Friday.
The troops of Assam Rifles, during the regular vehicle check at Tengnoupal check post intercepted two van going towards Imphal. On thorough inspection of the vehicles, they were found to be plying with 31 packages containing 710 pairs of illegally smuggled shoes to be further transported to Imphal, the Assam Rifles said.
Two drivers were also detained. They have been identified as Laishram Puni Singh, resident of Bamon Lekai Thangjam Leirak, Porompat, Imphal East and Oinam Amarjit, resident of Khurai Ningthoubung Leikai Porompat, Imphal East.
The assessed market value of the recovered contraband is worth Rs 10.71 Lakh
The recovered goods, vehicles and detainees have been handed over to customs department for further investigation, the Assam Rifles said.
