Imphal: Manipur Police rescued three persons from the hands of kidnappers suspected to be militants, on Thursday, from a forest area in Imphal East district.
State police, on Thursday at around 11: 30 am, received a report that two labourers–Yumnam Sushilkumar, 30, son of Y. Irabot of Thoubal Athokpam Makha Leikai (Caretaker) and Laishram Debchandra Singh, 50, son of late L.Tomba of Khangabok Mamang Leikai (mason) working on construction of bridge at Laikhong near Nongpok Keithelmanbi (under PMGSY) were kidnapped by suspected Kuki militants on February 7 at about 10 pm.
Imphal East district police commandos led by additional superintendent of police (ops), Imphal East; deputy superintendent of police (CDO), Imphal East Kh. Herojit and officer-in-charge (CDO), Imphal East Kh. Henery launched intensive search operations in the areas of Keihao, Henjang, Kamuching forest Hill Range.
After continuous search operation on Friday at about 5 am there was exchange of fire at the hill range between Boljang and New Boljang village when the pollice teams approached the areas. After more than two hours of firing, the armed Kuki militants fled the area and three persons kidnapped by them were rescued, police said.
Along with Sushilkumar and Debchandra the third person, Ngangbam Gunadhar, 55, son of Nabakumar of Kanglasiphai.
On verification of the rescued persons, they stated that the three of them were abducted by the suspected militants demanding ransom, police said.
One AK-56 assault rifles was also recovered from their hideout area, it added.
