Imphal: Troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) recovered cigarettes and other illegally transported commercial goods worth Rs 72 Lakhs on Tuesday.
Based on a specific input about movement of some illegal items in the area of Yairipok, troops established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post along the Yairipok – Hongbi Road. The team intercepted three White Colour and one Green Colour Maruti Gypsy suspicious of carrying illegal items.
On detail search of the vehicles, 34,500 packets of WIN cigarettes, 1,000 packets of Esse Light cigarettes, other items including eleven boxes of mosquito repellent, four boxes of tinned fish and six Mikko mosquito repellent. Four individuals carrying the consignment were apprehended, Assan Rifles said.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as Benjamin, 52, of Khundung, Ningthar, 55, of Chakma, Somi, 48, of Chakma and Amzad, 40, of Lilong. The assessed commercial value of the seized contraband items is Rs 72 lakh.
The apprehendees along with the seized items were handed over to customs and excise department, Pallel for further legal action, Assam Rifles said.
