Imphal: Manipur Police stopped Village Defence Force (VDF) relay hunger-strike which taken up at Kwakeitel Bazar, demanding increase in remuneration and service regularisation.
The relay-hunger-strike was launched on Sunday amid total lockdown.
All Manipur VDF Welfare Association condemned the police act for opposing the hunger strike.
General secretary of the VDF welfare association, Sh. Sanjit Singh said, “The relay-hunger strike is suspended in view of the Covid-19 issue, but we will continue our Gun-down and Pen-down agitation until our demands are fulfilled,”
The VDF personnel have been taking up ‘Gun-down and Pen-down’ strike since July 16. The VDF welfare association decided to take up the hunger strike ‘as the state government fails to listen to the voice of the VDF’.
The VDF welfare association has been demanding the government to provide grant of arms allowances, grant of 13 months pay and washing allowances, and demanded service regularisation.
Pressing for these demands the VDF welfare submitted a memorandum to chief minister N. Biren Singh on July 7 and served a deadline to respond to its demands by July 15.
As the state government failed to respond the VDF launched the Gun-down and Pen-down agitation strike on the next day of the deadline.
The welfare association complained that the VDF has been engaged as a force multiplier and assistance to the local police since the last 12 years under the Manipur Police department.
