Imphal: At least three Assam Rifles jawans died and five others were injured in an ambush by suspected militant near Sajik Tampak in Chandel district of Manipur along the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday evening.
The border area is about 104 km from the state capital Imphal.
The incident took place when troops of Assam Rifles of 4 AR Khongtal were returning to their post after three days operation along the Indo-Myanmar border. The troops came under IED attacks followed by ambush with lethod at Khomtam village about 2 km short from the post.
The deceased soldiers have been identified as havildar Pranay Kalita, rifleman Ratan Salam and rifleman Methna Konyak.
The injured soldiers were identified as subedar Ngulkhotil, NK Sikander Singh, rifleman Anish Kumar, havildar Nital Sarmah and rifleman Sandeep Kumar. Ngulkhotil was injured at the right hand, Sikander was injured at the right hand and right leg, Anish Kumar was injured at the right leg, Nital Sarmah was injured at the right hand and Sandeep Kumar was injured at the left soldier.
Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh said, “I strongly condemn the cowardice attack on 4 Assam Rifles in Chandel district. My heartfelt tribute to the security personnel martyred in the attack. These bravehearts have sacrificed their life for the Nation to bring peace and prosperity in this region. My heart goes out to the martyred bravehearts and their bereaved families.”
Update 6.06 pm: Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF), Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) and United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) in a joint press statement have claimed that the ambush at Sajik Tampak on 30th July was jointly conducted by the combined team of the outfits.
It also claimed that during ambush around 4 IOF personnel were killed.
