MINISTER SHYAMKUMAR INSPECTS INDO-MYANMAR BORDER

Moreh, January 24, 2017 (DIPR): Forest and Environment Minister Thaounaojam Shyamkumar today inspected the Indo-Myanmar border area and also visited Holenphai village in Tengnoupal district as part of his forest inspection tour. Holenphai village is in the border and is the last village of Manipur.

Speaking to media persons at the Holenphai village, Minister Th. Shyamkumar said trees are being cut down in large scale in Myanmar side and transported illegally to India. He said if massive cutting continues in the border area, the effect of climate change will impact both the countries. He further appealed to the people of the area not to cut trees and help in saving the environment.

Th. Shyamkumar said the Chief Minister will be consulted on possible steps to be taken to combat the global warming and stop illegal transportation of logs from Myanmar side via Manipur.

He said Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department will conduct mass plantation of trees at the Indian side, where the trees have been earlier cut. He said fruit bearing trees like jackfruit, leeche and even cashew will be planted. He said experts will be also consulted so that suitable fruit bearing trees are planted in the region.

He was accompanied by Lalkholun Haokip, village chief of Holenphai village and officials, including Forest Department officials. Forest and Environment Minister Th. Shyamkumar yesterday inspected the forest areas in Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur district. Right after the inspection, he visited the Tengnoupal district.
