Retired lady doctor murdered at home

Imphal: A 67-year-old woman, a retired doctor,  was reportedly murdered by unidentified miscreants at her residence in Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak, here, on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Dr. Asem Ongbi Rita, wife of Asem Muhindro.

The incident occurred inside the living room on the second floor of the residence while she was alone at home.

Police said the crime is suspected to have taken place between 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm.

Locals said the main gate of the residence, usually kept closed, was found open around that time.

Family members discovered Dr. Rita lying in a pool of blood upon their return at around 5:00 pm. She was immediately taken to Raj Medicity, where doctors declared her “brought dead.”

Rita is a retired physiotherapist of Regional Institute of Medical Science. Her husband is a senior advocate and her 25 years old son is also an advocate.

A team of Imphal police station, accompanied by a forensic science unit, rushed to the scene for investigation.

Police said that while no valuables or ornaments appeared to be missing, the CCTV cameras inside the residence were found damaged, and the hard drive of the recording system was missing.

A case has been registered at Imphal police station, and an investigation is underway to trace the culprits.

“Today around 1 pm, we noticed the gate open, which seemed unusual,” a local told reporters.

Chingakham Jamuna, vice-president of Yaiskul Apunba Meira Paibi, who visited the spot, said,

“We saw her lying with blood around. It looked like she was attacked with a heavy object on the head. The authorities must identify and arrest the culprits at the earliest. This incident has left us in tense that if such a crime can happen inside a secured home on the second floor, no one feels safe.”
