NPP chief visits Manipur, calls for peace

Imphal:  National People’s Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma has arrived here on Thursday on his two days visit to Manipur with the top priority of restoration of peace and normalcy in Manipur.

Sangma said that his visit will also engage with various stakeholders to resolve the unrest in the state, as reporters interacted with him at Imphal International Airport.

He was accompanied by Paknga Bage, general secretary (Organisation), Saidul Khan, national secretary; and Nickey Nongkhlaw, national president, NPYF.

According to his circular issued by the party, Sangma after reaching Imphal will meet civil bodies of Meitei, Nagas and displaced persons.

Sangma said, “The purpose is very simple. I have come to meet my party leaders and also the people of Manipur to interact, engage, and see how we can take things forward and ensure that normalcy returns.”

He said several efforts had been made. However, some have given results and some are yet to get results, but with more engagement and interaction normalcy can be restored steadily. The party is also trying hard on restoration of peace and normalcy.

“For the past few months no major incident have occurred which we assumed violence has reduced but not completely.”

“Democracy is very important and that a democratically elected government is a key part of normalcy in Manipur. We are hopeful that we will be able to take things forward,”  the NPP chief said.

On the NPP’s performance in upcoming elections, Sangma said it was up to the people to decide. “We will do our best to organise the party and serve the people. The election is still some time away; what’s more important now is to ensure peace and normalcy return in the state.”

On the issue of pending by-elections, Sangma said the party was still waiting for a response from the Election Commission and would inform the media once updates are received.

In the 60 seat Manipur Legislative Assembly, NPP shared seven seats. After the demise of N Kiyasii in January, NPP has 6 MLAs at present.
