Indefinite road blockade on damaged Mayai Lambi over negligence

Imphal: The Mayai Lambi Apunba Lup (MALAL) has announced to launch an indefinite blockade along National Highway-137A (Mayai Lambi) starting on Thursday midnight, demanding the government to immediately repair and restore the damaged road.

The people’s organisation, in a press statement, said the road has become unsafe for travel due to years of neglect and poor maintenance. “The condition of the highway has caused many accidents and made daily travel very difficult for people living in the area. It is in a terrible condition with full of potholes and uneven surfaces.”

The road has been left unattended. Heavy rain and landslides have blocked parts of it, said the people’s organisation and blamed government officials for failing to take quick action as both vehicles and residents suffer.

The poor road condition has affected important public services like electricity repairs, water supply, and the transport of goods. If road is not fixed soon, the situation could lead to more economic problems and affect emergency services in nearby areas, it added.

Huirem Shyamaksho Meetei, publicity secretary of the organisation, said the group has been urging the government for months, but no action has been taken up. “The Mayai Lambi road cannot be ignored any longer. It must be repaired immediately to prevent more accidents and ensure smooth movement of goods and services,” he said.

The organisation appealed other local organisations, clubs, Meira Paibis and civil bodies to support the movement to press the government so as to begin repair work as soon as possible.

Residents of the area have supported the blockade, saying that the road condition has worsened to the point where even short-distance travel has become risky.

Transporters and daily commuters hoped that the government will step in quickly to fix the damaged highway.
