Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apologise to the people of state, said Lok Sabha MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam when media asked him of his expectation during the Prime Minister’s visit to Manipur.

Modi is expected to visit Manipur on September 13 for which preparatory works have been taken up.

The Prime Minister has been criticised, at the Parliament, at different quarters from different sections at state and national levels, for not visiting the crisis ridden Manipur to solve the issue and restore normalcy in the state.

MP Bimol Akoijam said, “If he (Modi) feels ashamed, he should apologise to the people of Manipur.”

He was answering to reporters on the sidelines of a traditional function at Lamlai in Imphal East on Tuesday.

Manipur has been at unrest since the eruption of Meitei-Kuki conflict on May 3, 2023. The violence has claimed more than 260 lives and displaced more than 60, 000 people. The Meitei community cannot move beyond valley districts in the state while the Kuki-Zo community cannot move in the valley. Many have been unable to return to their original homes, where houses were dismantled and set on fire.

Though Manipur today witnesses almost an end to physical conflict, fear remains in the minds of people of fresh clash outbreak. The Kuki-Zo people have been pressing the Union government for a seperate administration while Meitei demand to send away immigrated Kuki-Zo people for triggering violence in the state.

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February after N. Biren Singh resigned as chief minister.
