Landslides cut off Imphal-Ukhrul highway, worsening flood affects vital sectors

Imphal: Following incessant rainfall since the past few days in Manipur, multiple landslides have cut off Imphal-Ukhrul road (National Highway 202); state government has extended closure for educational institutions till Wednesday; patients at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences have been advised to evacuate.

The highest rainfall was recorded at Sainik School, Pangei,  Imphal East (102.5 mm) while Ukhrul, Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Imphal experienced moderate rainfall, according to Imphal meteorological centre.

Manipur water resource department in its daily report said water level of most of the major rivers are flowing above flood level.

Officials confirmed that Thoubal river has been overflooded in multiple areas, while multiple breach of Imphal river in Imphal East district.

The flood has affected many government and private institutions in Imphal east including deputy commissioner’s office complex, Porompat police station, district revenue office were among others.

Medical superintendent of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science hospital at Porompat in Imphal East has issued a circular circular issued on Tuesday. It said, “Due to sudden increase of water level in and around the hospital complex, all the patients got admitted in different wards should be evacuated with immediate effect. No new admission shall be done till further notice.”

The state government has also announced to close educational institutions on Wednesday too.

Rescue operation of the 70 years old swept away with the strong current of Iril river in Imphal East district remains untraceable. State Disaster Response Force and local volunteers with the assistance of other security forces have conductimg search operation, officials said.
