More cops suspended over alleged drug case misconduct in Manipur

Imphal: Four policemen, other than the officer-in-charge of the Imphal East commando unit, Ningthoujam Devdas, have been suspended for alleged grave misconduct in connection with a drug-related case, officials confirmed on Monday.

The suspended cops were sub-inspector B. Debson Singh of commando Imphal East, constable Tarique Aziz of commando Imphal East, head  constable Md. Rakib of commando Thoubal, and Jemadar Md. Amin Shah of the 7th Battalion, Khabeisoi.

According to an official, the five police personnel were reportedly involved in a drug case in which some drug peddlers, apprehended along the NH-102 (Indo-Myanmar road) with illegal drugs, were released after accepting a bribe of Rs 6 lakh, though the seized drugs were retained.

Police records reveal that in 2013, sub-inspector Debson was arrested for transporting pseudoephedrine tablets worth over Rs 3 crore to Moreh, a border town in Tengnoupal district.

“Manipur government had also withdrawn the Chief Minister’s Gallantry Award from B. Debson at the behest of a student’s organisation and was put under suspension,” an official said.

An order issued on Friday by Imphal East SP Rakesh Balwal stated that sub-inspector B. Debson Singh has been placed under suspension for grave misconduct and dereliction of duty, with immediate effect.

In two separate orders issued on Sunday, SP Rakesh Balwal confirmed the immediate suspension of Rakib and Aziz under the same rule.

In two separate orders issued on Sunday, Thoubal district police additional superintendent N. Suraj Singh and Imphal East SP Rakesh Balwal confirmed the immediate suspension of Rakib and Aziz respectively.
