4 Manipur MLAs meet Guv over FMR, Border Fencing issues

Imphal:  Four MLAs  of Manipur called on Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan, here on Monday and discussed various issues related to border areas.

The MLAs were Awangbou Newmai, Khashim Vashum and Leishiyo Keishing of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), and Independent MLA J. Kumo Sha.

They apprised the governor about the issues among others the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and Border Fencing. They requested the governor to take appropriate steps to facilitate an amicable resolution, said governor’s secretariat.

The development came up amid the pressure of the United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur for reinstatement of the Free Movement Regime and rollback of of the seven districts created in 2016.

The UNC says that the FMR’s suspension has negatively impacted Naga communities on either side of the India-Myanmar border, severing historical, cultural, and familial ties. It says the seven districts have caused further division and disruption, and negatively impacted Naga areas.
