Provide fixed timeline for displaced people’s return to original homes: Manipur PCC to governor

Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has demanded the governor to provide a clear and fixed timeline for the return and resettlement of displaced persons to their original homes in their respective districts.

Manipur PCC president Keisham Meghachandra stressed that both the central and state governments must ensure that no policy further divides the already troubled communities of Manipur.

Meghachandra on Thursday submitted a letter to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, pressing for urgent action on issues related to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state.

Meghachandra called for all financial assistance meant for IDPs to be transferred directly into the individual bank accounts of those affected. He urged the government to issue an immediate executive order to implement this, so that the funds reach the rightful beneficiaries without the involvement of middlemen or local representatives.

The Congress leader requested an independent investigation into the illegal construction of pre-fabricated houses without proper tenders. He also pointed to irregularities in the supply of relief materials, claiming that payments were made even when goods were not delivered.

Meghachandra talked to reporters after the meeting at Raj Bhavan.

He alleged that public funds have been misused since the violence began on May 3, 2023, and stressed that a thorough probe is necessary to ensure justice and accountability.

Addressing the demands is essential to help the displaced communities and to restore public trust in the state’s administration, he added.
