Imphal: Various outstanding Manipur fish farmers were feted by the Fisheries department on the occasion of the 25th National Fish Farmers Day, celebrated at their office premises at Lamphelpat, Imphal on Thursday.
The department has not only fulfilled project ‘Sareng’ but also trying hard to revive ‘Ngakijou’ with some of the experts and it is in the pipeline, said Fisheries director T. Phulen Meitei on the occasion encouraging all the awarded farmers to produce more in coming years.
The Highest Producer of Fish (Individual Category) and Highest Indigenous Fish Producer was bagged by Salam Lokendro Singh of Laphupat Tera, Imphal West district, who produced 43765 Kg of fish, last year at Fish Fair cum Fish Crop Competition, with a cash prize of One lakh along with a citation.
Ningthoujam Basanta Singh of Khordak, Bishenpur district and Laimujam Dinamani of Tentha, Thoubal district bagged 2nd and 3rd positions and won a cash prize of Rs 70 thousands and Rs 50 thousands respectively.
Consolation prizes were rewarded to twenty fish farmers with a cash reward of Rs 10 thousand each.
The director said the purpose of this day was not only a celebration of fish farmers but also to celebrate the various development in the sector of fish farming. The credit goes to the recent introduction of blue revolution and additional different technologies making it possible to meet the demands of the consumers. It is a day to honour all the dedicated farmers who have been contributing at their maximum level, he added.
There is always a room for improvement for the department in the coming months while lauding his staff for their dedication and efforts towards the welfare of the fishermen, he said.
He appealed to all the farmers to avail different insurance schemes introduced by the government.
A book was also released on the occasion. Presentation of songs by Hamom Shadananda was a gathering attraction.
