Imphal: Tobacco and its products were seized on Monday in Imphal East and West districts for violating Regulation 2.3.4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations, 2011.

The seizure was made during a drive conducted by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Imphal East, the District Food Safety department, and the National Tobacco Control Programme, with the assistance of Manipur Police.

The drive was aimed to crack down on the illegal sale of tobacco products which are harmful to health, chief medical officer of Imphal East, Dr. Lourembam Indira Devi, told reporters.

Raids were conducted in areas of Khongnang Ani Karak, Chingmeirong, and Mantripukhri, where a significant quantity of 17 different types of tobacco products were seized. The items include gutkha, twin packets, and other banned products.

Dr. Indira said exact number of items seized is yet to be determined, as the process of sealing and inventory is still underway.

The drive will continue in other parts of Imphal East district. Once legal procedures are completed, the seized products will be destroyed in front of the media for transparency, she added.

The seized items were sealed and kept in the custody of the CMO, Imphal East.
