Imphal: Manipur government has taken up stringent measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of Rabies in Churachandpur.

A 33-year-old man, Joseph Lalhaulian Inn from New Zoveng, Churachandpur, died from rabies infection on Thursday night.

Officials confirmed that at least three rabies-related cases  have been treated at Churachandpur district hospital. In response, the concerned department has intensified vaccination efforts across selected localities, charging Rs 20 per injection to ensure accessibility.

The outbreak has been concentrated in specific sub-divisions of the district, with New Zoveng village in Churachandpur sub-division identified as a major hotspot. The village has been declared a “Containment Zone” with immediate effect, said a government notification.

District magistrate Dharun Kumar on Friday said, “The movement of domesticated pets and stray dogs in and out of New Zoveng Village is strictly prohibited. All dogs, both domesticated and stray, must be vaccinated against rabies under the supervision of the District Veterinary Department.”

The chief medical officer and the Veterinary cepartment will conduct door-to-door health monitoring and check-ups for residents and animals. During the containment period, the sale and transport of domestic dogs and other animals are strictly prohibited, the administrator said.

The administration promised to eastablish a control room District Veterinary department.

Churachandpur district have been mandated to vaccinate their pets against rabies, with penalties for non-compliance. Quick Response Teams will be mobilized for mass vaccination campaigns, the chief medical officer said.

Health authorities urged the public to seek immediate medical attention at government hospitals or health centers in case of animal bites, particularly from dogs.

“Medical facilities in the district are equipped to administer rabies vaccines free of charge to victims.”
