Imphal: Protesting against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, people in thousands took to the streets in Muslim inhabited areas of Manipur on Sunday.

The demonstrations were led by members of the Meitei Pangal community. They assembled at multiple Idgahs, holding placards and chanting slogans denouncing BJP policies. Protesters expressed dissatisfaction with political figures like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu.

Demonstrations were reported in several Muslim-majority areas of Sora, Mayang Imphal, Kshetri Awang Leikai, and Lilong in Thoubal district and in Imphal East district. The largest turnout was observed at Lilong.

The protestors demanded revocation of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

“All properties under Waqf belong to Allah; the government cannot claim any Waqf property. We will continue our protests until it is revoked,” said a protestor.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced in August and passed recently, proposes 40 amendments to the existing Waqf Act. The bill has faced opposition from various quarters. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) appealed to secular political parties and Members of Parliament to oppose the bill, asserting that it infringes upon the rights of the Muslim community.
