Imphal: Imagi Meira, a women body in Manipur, has lambasted Union Home minister Amit Shah for his statement on the need to impose President’s Rule (PR) in the state.

Convenor of the women organisation, Th. Sujata argued that if PR was meant to control the crisis, it should have been imposed in 2023 immediately after the May 3 incident.

“The imposition of PR in Manipur was to defend the loopholes and protect the BJP government in the state. A day before the Manipur Legislative Assembly was to be convened, chief  minister N. Biren Singh tendered his resignation, and four days later, PR was imposed by suspending the legislative assembly,” Sujata said.

Following his announcement of ‘free movement’ on all roads in Manipur, a 20-year-old individual went missing and remains untraceable. It is shameful that the government announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information on the missing person amid PR, she criticized the Home minister.

Hareshwar Goshwami, Manipur PCC chief spokesperson, narrated that the imposition of PR, nearly two years after the Manipur crisis erupted, as a failure of both the state and central BJP governments. “Amit Shah cannot claim that peace is being restored just because there has been a temporary halt in gunfights.”
