Imphal: Calling on Muslim representatives to file a petition in the Supreme Court to protect the “Religious rights of Muslims”, thousands of Muslims took to the streets across Manipur in protest against the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, on Tuesday.
Following the law’s enactment on April 5, demonstrations have been witnessed across the country, and Manipur joined the rest of the nation.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest at Kwakta, Bishnupur district, a protestor, Abdul Nasir said, “The Act is against the Muslim community. We are protesting for the protection of religious rights of Muslims. We are the first to be targeted through such an Act, while sidelining other religious communities. In a democratic country like India, such an Act should not have been passed.”
He expressed concern over the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Waqf Board, calling it an infringement on religious practices.
“Since the Mughal period, the Waqf Board has managed religious properties like masjids, mosques, and kabristans. The involvement of non-Muslims under the new Act may interfere with our religious matters. This Act must be revoked”, said Nasir.
Thousands of protestors gathered at the Kwakta public ground and marched nearly 3 km along the Tiddim Road (NH-150) connecting Imphal and Aizawl via Churachandpur.
In a strong political move, MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan of the Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency, Imphal East, announced on Tuesday that he would challenge the Act in the Supreme Court.
A human-chain demonstration was staged at Khurai Heikrumakhong, Imphal East, holding placards with slogans “Go back Modi’s Hinduism-centered govt.”, “Don’t politicise religion”, “Stop Waqf Amendment Act”.
