Imphal: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs on Tuesday discussed on Delimitation process in a crucial meeting held at the party office, here on Tuesday.

The meeting was led by BJP state president Sarda Devi.

Twelve BJP MLAs and state unit BJP office bearers took part in the discussion.

MLA Y. Khemchand Singh informed reporters that the deliberations focused on the impact and implications of the delimitation process.

MLA Kongkham Robindro Singh said, “BJP MLAs are advocating for a temporary delay in the exercise,”

MLA Govindas Konthoujam emphasized the necessity of implementing the National Register of Citizens prior to the delimitation process to ensure accurate demographic representation.

MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh reassured citizens that the exercise would not adversely affect Manipur and urged them to remain calm.

Refraining of other MLAs commenting to reporters on their stance added to the uncertainty surrounding the BJP’s position on the issue.

The Supreme Court, on March 17, granted the Centre three months to complete the pending delimitation exercise in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam. This decision followed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s request for additional time.

Political parties, like the NPP, JD-U, CPI, and AAP, have already called for a deferment of the delimitation process.

Civil society organizations, particularly the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, have demanded a delay until the controversial 2001 Manipur census is corrected.
