Imphal: The People’s Progressive Alliance, Manipur (PPAM), a coalition of 16 civil society organizations, has issued an ultimatum to form a popular government within a week or face a statewide signature campaign that could expose who are ready to lead.

The ultimatum was served through a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club, here, on Tuesday.

Sajad Buyamayum, a member of the alliance, said to reporters, “If they can’t come together to form a government now, what’s the point of having an Assembly?” “Centre should dissolve it and call for fresh elections.”

The people’s alliance expressed dissatisfaction over the ongoing political vacuum and worsening law and order situation in the state. It proposed signature campaign intending to directly identify MLAs who are willing to take responsibility.

“BJP cannot keep dodging its duty. Waiting always for Delhi’s instructions is of no excuse,” said Sujata, another PPAM member.

She reacted Union Home minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks in the Rajya Sabha, where he claimed that the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur was not a unilateral move by the Centre, but rather a consequence of the MLAs’ failure to form a government.

“It’s a political blame game. Centre has failed Manipur in multiple ways. Now they’re trying to pass the buck.”

The people’s alliance highlighted deep concern over security lapses, particularly the continued violence along National Highway 2, between Sekmai and Kangpokpi. “If the Centre cannot secure a 30-kilometer stretch of road, how can we trust it to guide governance at the state level?” Sujata asked.

She questions over law enforcement’s ability or willingness to track down key players in the ongoing unrest. “Where is Mukesh? Why are the authorities playing politics instead of protecting people? We’re done watching this drama. Our representatives must protect us.
