Imphal: NPP MLA in Manipur, Sheikh Noorul Hassan of Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency, Imphal East has claimed he was attempted to assassin by a suspected drug mafia group in Imphal East on Saturday night.

“It was a life attempt. A drug mafia gang of around a hundred attacked me in a well-planned manner. They fired gunshots,” Hassan said.

The MLA was briefing reporters at his residence in Imphal East on Tuesday.

He showed a scar on his chest, sustained in the alleged assault.

The attack occurred as the legislator was leaving his sister’s residence after a family dinner.

Hassan said a mob had already assembled near Kshetrigao High School, close to his home. “The group was led by one Md Ajmal, a known figure reportedly out on bail in NDPS-related cases.”

“They rushed toward me, grabbed my hand, and tried to choke me by the neck. I somehow managed to free myself. My security team intervened and took me to a safer location,” he said. “But the mob began pelting stones and even opened fire. One of them pointed a gun at my forehead.”

Security personnel reportedly fired several blank rounds, enabling a safe escape, he added.

He said the street lamps were deliberately turned of and it was a well-planned attack.

Hassan said his earlier communication with an Imphal East district official regarding verification of construction work at the government-run Kshetrigao High School might have connection with the attack.

A suo moto case has been registered at Porompat police station. Hassan has submitted a written complaint.
