Imphal: Following the arson attack on the residence of the Manipur BJP Minority Morcha president on Sunday night by protestors, the district magistrate, Thoubal has imposed curfew across the entire Lilong Assembly Constituency, effective immediately from Monday.
According to a government order, at around 6:30 pm on Sunday, a mob of approximately 7,000 to 8,000 armed with lathis and stones stormed the residence of Md Askar Ali in Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei, Thoubal district and set it on fire.
The unrest was triggered by Manipur BJP Minority Morcha president Alkar Ali, for posting his support to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 on social media.
The bill officially became law on Saturday following presidential assent by President Droupadi Murmu, who also approved the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025.
On Sunday, thousands from the Muslim community held a mass demonstration demanding the withdrawal of the Bill.
“The matter is very sensitive in and around the Lilong Assembly Constituency, and there is a likelihood of further disturbances that pose a risk to peace and public tranquility,” said the government order.
