Imphal: Proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) (KCP-PWG), planted a high-explosive hand grenade at the main gate of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Manipur registrar’s residence, in Imphal East on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm at the residence of NIT Manipur Registrar Khumukcham Tomba, Kiyamgei Maning Leikai, Imphal East, under the jurisdiction of Irilbung police station.

According to police, the family members informed authorities about the threat.

A warning note found alongside the explosive read: “Last warning Kh. Tomba, Registrar NIT, KCP-PWG.”

“Since the grenade’s safety pin was intact, our personnel followed necessary procedures to recover and seize the bomb around 11:30 pm. The incident is suspected to be linked to a monetary demand,” said a police officer.

A case has been registered at Irilbung police station.

To combat illegal activities and address increasing complaints of extortion, the state home department established an Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell in February. A toll-free number (1800-202-3326) has also been introduced for public and government officials to report extortion threats.

The cell coordinated with relevant police stations to take appropriate action.
