Imphal: A one-day media sensitization workshop on ‘My Waste, My Responsibility’ was held on Thursday at Manipur University.

The workshop was jointly organised by the College Development Council, Manipur University and MAHUD department, Manipur.

Manipur University vice-chancellor Prof. Naorem Lokendra Singh, said the conditions of sanitation in India have been drastically changed under the Swachh Bharat Mission in a very short period of time. Previously, open space defecation was practiced in mass but with the implementation of Swachh Bharat Campaign, India is globally recognized for successfully controlling those unhygienic practices.

In Manipur, various central sponsored schemes related with cleanliness and proper hygiene are already implemented in different areas, the university has also been trying by organizing many awareness related programmes and meetings with an objective to come up with presentable level whereas, still we are not able to achieve it, he added.

He highlighted that Manipur was known for its cleanliness some years back but due to changes in socio-political characteristics, many changes are witnessed in recent years so, in order to coup up with such changes associated hygienic lifestyle, he opted the inclusion of syllabus in all the academic lessons.

Ngangom Uttam Singh, director, IPR and MAHUD department, Manipur said since media personnels have a very tight and busy schedule, it will not be right to confine them for whole day so he opted to organize such workshops in series basis.

He, emphasizing more on solid waste management, said if we stand unified then only, we can definitely reduce the cost of solid wastes management which is very expensive. There are various challenges being faced to maintain cleanliness in all the 25 towns of the state. In order to achieve our goal, we should never forget our contributions henceforth, such workshop “My Waste, My Responsibility” is being organized, he added.

He affirmed that, various technologies, methods, machineries and techniques are being installed and implemented to achieve the targeted goal. He urged the general public to accustom with the ideology of “Reduce, Re-use and Re-cycle.

Dr. T. Brajakumar Singh, director, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, scholars, faculties, students of Manipur University as well as media persons of various media houses were present. The programme was concluded with an interaction between the media personal and experts.
