Imphal: In connection with the firing incident reported in Wakan area disrupting the prayer rituals at Kongba Maru temple in Imphal East on Friday morning, police said ⁠Kuki Inpi- Saikul and village chiefs of Kuki villages in and around Wakan area were summoned and sternly warned to stay away from causing disturbances in the area and to take severe action if such incidents repeat.

Kuki militants launched the attack on a group of Meeteis performing rituals at the temple, a day after Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei group, surrendered hundreds of arms, and amidst the government’s peace initiative.

Security forces deployed in the area and its vicinity were alerted immediately and combing operations, area sanitization and area domination were conducted in Wakan Ridge and Mark Hills Ridge area, said Manipur police control room.

“Maximum efforts are being continued to identify the culprits and arrest them at the earliest. Ops and Area domination will continue further to ensure peace and tranquility in the area.”

Further, security forces in the area have been briefed to stay alert to mitigate untowardly situation and to retaliate effectively in case of violation, the police control room said.

Some parts of the sacred Kongba Maru temple were set ablaze by Kuki militants on July 6, 2023.
