Imphal: Public has handed over a total of 93 weapons in three days after governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla extended the ultimatum of another seven days till March 6.
On Monday 33 different types of weapons, various ammunitions amd munitions and other miscellaneous items were voluntarily surrendered by the public in Churachandpur, Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Bishnupur districts.
On Sunday 20 different types of weapons, various ammunitions and munitions and other miscellaneous items were voluntarily surrendered in Imphal East, Bishnupur, Jiribam and Imphal West districts.
On Saturday of 42 weapons, various ammunitions and munitions and other miscellaneous items were voluntarily surrendered by the public in Imphal West, Churachandpur, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Tamenglong districts.
State police department appealed to public to return the looted arms, ammunition and explosives to the police or nearest security forces immediately.
Governor Bhalla issued an order on Friday, stating that the extension was granted in response to demands from people in both the hills and the valley.
He had earlier appealed to the public on February 20 to surrender illegal weapons within seven days. On the seventh day (Thursday), a total of 307 weapons were handed over to the authority. Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei group, deposited 246 weapons at the 1st Manipur Rifles campus on this day.
The government order assured that no punitive action would be taken against those who surrender their weapons within this period.
