Imphal: Indian authorities deported 27 Myanmar nationals, including a minor, through the Indo-Myanmar border gate check post at Moreh, Tengnoupal district of Manipur on Friday.
As the group who had entered India illegally completed their jail terms, they were handed over to Myanmar immigration officers at the Indo-Myanmar Friendship Bridge.
Officials confirmed that the deportation was carried out around 11 am, with support from personnel of the Moreh police station, Indian immigration authorities, and the 5 Assam Rifles.
The detainees had been held at a foreigner detention center near the Manipur Central Jail in Imphal East district.
This latest development came after the deportation of 26 Myanmar nationals on January 26 and another batch of 38 immigrants on May 2 last year via the Integrated Check Post at Moreh.
In March last year, seven Myanmar nationals, including women and children, were airlifted from Imphal International Airport to the border town of Moreh.
Union Home minister Amit Shah repeatedly highlighted the issue of illegal immigration as a key factor contributing to the ongoing Manipur crisis. He assured that the Indian government is accelerating efforts to complete border fencing along the porous Indo-Myanmar border to curb further illegal crossings.
Authorities continued to monitor border security closely as part of ongoing measures on the immigration issue.
