Imphal: Failure to appoint a new leader of the majority BJP had invited to impose President Rule in Manipur, said former chief minister and CLP leader of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh on Friday.
Ibobi was talking to reporters at Manipur PCC office, here.
Since the regime of Atal Bihari Vajpayee BJP has not be suited to Manipur, he said
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra claimed that the imposition of President’s Rule and the suspension of the state Assembly was a direct result of the central government recognizing the political divisions within the legislature amid an ongoing leadership crisis.
“With the administration now under the Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surely address the Manipur crisis—a crisis he has remained silent on since the outbreak of violence. His intervention is crucial to resolving the ongoing turmoil.”
Meghachandra expressed hope that the Prime Minister would visit Manipur to witness firsthand the suffering of its people, as law and order in the state have been deteriorated since the outbreak of the violence in the state.
Imposition of President’s Rule and the suspension of the state Assembly would have significant repercussions on Manipur’s budget, the Congress leader said.
“The responsibility for safeguarding Manipur’s territorial and administrative integrity now lies entirely with the Union government.”
Ibobi strongly opposed the imposition of President’s Rule, calling it a “wrong step and a flawed policy” that does not reflect the will of the people.
He said although President’s Rule was officially imposed on Thursday, Manipur had been functioning under an unofficial version of it for some time back. He pointed out that maintaining law and order is the rightful responsibility of the state government, but in Manipur’s case, the situation has been the opposite.
