Imphal: Four Kuki National Front-Presidential faction (KNF-P) were arrested on Friday near Bimparao along National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur) for ‘involvement in extortion’.

Police confirmed that the arrested cadres belonged to KNF-P and identified them as Lungousem Kipgen, 29, of Phaijol village (Kangchup), Letminlal Kipgen, 25, of Ebenezer village, Satminlun Tuboi, 24, of Chalbung village, and Thanggoulun Kilong, 27 of Luwangsanggol village, all from Kangpokpi district, Manipur.

They were apprehended around 7:30am by a joint team of Kangpokpi district police and A/155 CRPF in Bongmol, near Bimparao, Kangpokpi district, along NH-2.

KNF-P is an armed militant group under the United People’s Front (UPF), an umbrella organization of Kuki underground outfits. It had signed a tripartite Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with both the state and central governments on August 22, 2008.

Manipur government withdrew from the agreement with two other militant groups—the Kuki National Army (KNA) and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA)—on March 10, 2023, citing their alleged role in inciting agitation among illegal forest encroachers. Since the expiry of the agreement on February 29, 2023, there has been no official confirmation regarding its extension.

Police said the arrested individuals were working under one Gogou Kipgen, alias Jamin, of the same underground outfit.

The arrests was made following an order issued by Kangpokpi district superintendent of police Manoj Prabhakar on Thursday.
