Imphal: Youth turned to village defense volunteers and took up arms as compelled to defend their villages against attacks by narco-terrorists and to protect Manipur’s territorial integrity, said MLA Th. Lokeshwar on Tuesday.
“Why aren’t security forces deployed in vulnerable areas stop militants’ attack and gunfights, instead of chasing village volunteers who are defending their villages?” He asked.
He was speaking during an public interaction programme held at the residence of Kh. Loken Singh, Sega Road Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal West.
The Meitei inhabited villages have been under armed Kuki-Zo attacks since May, 2023.
Lokeshwar urged the government to instruct security forces to take stringent actions and adopt necessary measures in vulnerable areas to stop the violence.
“Why the so-called double-engine government is unable to control the ongoing violence in Manipur? The deployment of over 60,000 central forces, along with state forces, should be sufficient to control the gunfights in peripheral areas.”
Lokeshwar said the chief minister of Manipur must clarify to the public what he meant by saying peace would be restored in the state after the appointment of a new governor.
