Imphal: Two individuals, including a purported member of the Bharatiya Janata Party Youth Manipur (BJYM), were apprehended at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal on Saturday with around 31.680 kg of cannabis (Ganja).
The duo was preparing to board an Indigo flight to Delhi.
“The contraband was detected by security personnel and CISF staff during routine baggage screening at the airport. The items were concealed in three separate bags belonging to the two passengers,” said police.
The apprehended individuals were identified as Rojit Chongtham, son of Ch. Mobimacha Singh of Singjamei Chongtham Leikai, Imphal West, reportedly the state secretary of BJYM, and Sarangthem Dingku, son of S. Ingocha Singh of Kakching Khunou Thingnam Bokul Leikai, Kakching district.
The cannabis was packed in three bags: a red bag containing 16.520 kg, a black bag containing 9.580 kg, and a green bag containing 5.680 kg, making a total of 31.78 kg.
The passengers were booked on Indigo flight 6E-2417 from Imphal to Delhi.
After the detection of the contraband, both passengers and the seized items were handed over to Singjamei police station.
Airport staff confirmed, “The contraband items were detected during baggage scanning using the X-ray machine before departure.”
BJP Manipur Pradesh vice-president Ch. Chidananda clarified that the party’s ‘youth wing working committee’ had been dissolved nearly two years ago.
“The youth wing of the party still exists, but the said person claiming to be the state secretary of BJYM is not related to the BJP,” Chidananda said.
Police said investigation is on to determine the origins of the contraband and any possible connections to a larger drug trafficking network.
