Imphal: The Traffic Regulation and Parking Committee (TRPC) needs to monitor illegal parking more effectively, especially in congested areas like the Khwairamband market in Imphal, said MAHUD minister Yumnam Khemchand on Friday.

The minister made the statement while speaking to reporters at a cleanliness drive conducted at Nagamapal, Khoyathong, and other key areas of Khwairamband market in preparation for the 76th Republic Day celebration.

The cleanliness drive was carried out in collaboration with the commissioner and director of MAHUD, along with other senior officials.

Responding to reporters, Khemchand said only a few public parking spaces approved by TRPC are under the municipal corporation. However, many illegal parking spots, which are not under municipal jurisdiction, are causing traffic congestion, particularly in the Khwairamband market area.

He emphasized that the TRPC, chaired by the transport minister, needs to intensify efforts to control traffic congestion in these areas.

Managing waste disposal in and around Khwairamband market cannot be the sole responsibility of the MAHUD department, he said. He highlighted the irresponsibility of street vendors and the lack of proper enrollment in garbage collection services.

He appealed to the public to register with garbage pickup trucks in their respective areas to ensure proper waste disposal and maintain cleanliness in Imphal city.
