Imphal: Tensions escalated in Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei villages after a Liangmai woman was allegedly assaulted by some youths reportedly belonging to the Chin-Kuki community on January 7 in Konsakhul village, Kangpokpi district.

The district magistrate of Kangpokpi has imposed an indefinite curfew in the two villages under the Kangchup Geljang sub-division of Kangpokpi district, effective immediately from Saturday.

The issue reportedly stemmed from a land dispute.

On January 8, the Konsaram Naga community issued a memorandum demanding that Leilon Vaiphei village vacate the disputed land within 15 days. The memorandum further warned that failure to comply would result in forced eviction and any violence ensuing would be the responsibility of Leilon Vaiphei (Kuki-Zo) village, labeled as “tenants.”

An order signed by Kangpokpi district magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari on Saturday stated that, as per reports received from the superintendent of police, Kangpokpi on January 11, there is an apprehension of a serious breach of peace and tranquility in the areas of Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei villages under the Kangchup Geljang sub-division.

As a precautionary measure to prevent unwanted incidents, the district magistrate issued the indefinite curfew under sub-section 1 of Section 163 of BNSS, 2023.

The order stated that there would be a prohibition on the movement of persons in and around the scheduled area with immediate effect until further notice.
