Imphal: Manipur’s Rural Development and Panchayati Raj minister Y. Khemchand urged Union minister of Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan to increase the number of sanctioned houses for over 17 months long crisis related displaced people to 15,000, pointing out that over 60,000 individuals have been displaced.

The minister appealed to raise the allocated amount to Rs 5 lakh per house.

Khemchand was addressing reporters at the Old Secretariat, here on Saturday.

Providing updates from a virtual meeting with Chouhan, Khemchand revealed that the Centre had sanctioned funds for constructing 7,000 houses for internally displaced persons, with each house costing Rs 1.3 lakh.

The Union minister listened attentively to the requests and Centre would respond positively to the state’s appeal, said Khemchand.

“The government is committed to restore peace and harmony in Manipur with all indigenous communities to embrace unity,” the minister appealed.

He concluded with a message of hope, asserting that the state administration is doing everything possible to address the crisis and rebuild lives.

Manipur has been on boil since May 3, last year, the day Kuki launched attack to Meitei to establish a Kukiland in Manipur.

Khemchand said Manipur has successfully surpassed its target under the Amrit Sarovar scheme, rejuvenating 1,228 water bodies against the goal of 1,220 set by the ministry of Rural Development. This significant achievement comes amid the ongoing crisis in the state, he added.
