Imphal: Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has directed the state director general of police (DGP) to prioritize the safety and security of the people and urged officers from the Army and paramilitary forces to extend their fullest cooperation to the administration in maintaining law and order in the state.

The governor chaired a security meeting at Raj Bhavan, here on Saturday and ‘comprehensively’ reviewed the overall security situation in the state.

Taking stock of the prevailing law and order situation, the governor reviewed the security apparatus and its arrangements throughout the state, with a particular focus on border areas.

Security advisor to the Govt. of Manipur, Kuldiep Singh; DGP Rajiv Singh; IGAR (South) Maj Gen Ravroop Singh and senior officers of CRPF and BSF attended the security meeting.

The development came up after Kuki protestors under the umbrella Committee on Tribal Unity, a Kuki body, ‘violently’ attacked the office of superintendent of police (SP) Kangpokpi district by pelting stones and petrol bombs.

The attack injured SP Manoj Prabhakar and damaged some vehicles. Prabhakar was injured on his forehead.

The Kuki committee demanded to withdraw Central Security Forces deployed at Saibol village (Uyok Ching)’.

Armed militants in combat uniforms were witnessed amid the agitation.

Chief minister N. Biren Singh posted the information of the security meeting on his Facebook wall stating that senior officials from CRPF, BSF, and IGAR (South) participated in the discussion to strengthen coordination and maintain peace across the state.

Kangpokpi district magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari had issued an order on Friday directing the sub-divisional magistrates of Kangpokpi, Champhai, Saitu, Gamphazol, Saikul and Lhungtin to station yourself at their headquarters with immediate effect and remain available for duty at all times.

They were instructed to refrain from leaving the headquarters without prior approval from the undersigned until further orders. They were also ordered to closely monitor the situation, liaise with local law enforcement agencies, and ensure the safety and security of the residents under their jurisdiction.

“In view of the prevailing law and order situation within your jurisdiction, it is imperative to maintain a close watch on the developments and to ensure prompt and effective administrative response as required,” Mahesh Chaudhari instructed.

Manipur Police Control Room on Friday said the situation was under control and being closely monitored.
