Imphal: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi) has urged the central government to declare “Narco-Terrorist Emergency” in the Northeast and take aggressive and transparent action against escalating narco-terrorism activities.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, signed by its media coordinator Laikhuram Jayenta, cited a media report revealing the existence of a secret underground tunnel along the Indo-Myanmar border, allegedly used for smuggling drugs into Indian territory.

Referring to the report, Cocomo said the underground tunnel, capable of accommodating heavy vehicles, is located along the Myanmar-Mizoram international border. The organization warned the central government that “this cannot be dismissed as merely the work of ordinary drug smugglers. The scale and sophistication of the operation point to the involvement of powerful actors, including influential entities in Mizoram and Myanmar’s Chin State.”

Cocomi demanded that the Government of India declare a state of “Narco-Terrorist Emergency” in the region and take decisive action.

“The longstanding apathy displayed by successive Indian governments toward such serious threats has emboldened perpetrators and jeopardized the security of the region. This tacit complicity cannot be ignored any longer,” the statement read.

The organisation issued a warning to the central government, stating that continued negligence of the Manipur crisis and its associated narco-terrorism activities would have serious consequences. It emphasized that failure to address the situation with urgency could lead to mounting criticism from the international community.

It called for a transparent and time-bound security resolution policy from both the central and state governments to address the Manipur crisis comprehensively. A thorough investigation into the alleged complicity of influential individuals and entities in Manipur, Mizoram, and Chin State in narco-terrorism activities. Immediate measures to dismantle the underground tunnel and other infrastructure supporting drug smuggling and illegal arms trafficking.

It demanded official acknowledgment by the Government of India and the Manipur Government of the geopolitical and narco-terrorism dimensions of the Manipur crisis, followed by concrete actions to counter these threats.

Cocomi said, “The ongoing crisis in Manipur cannot be dismissed as a mere ethnic conflict but is a complex issue intertwined with narco-terrorism and broader geopolitical dynamics.”

It urged the Government of India to act decisively and transparently before the situation spirals further out of control, warning that inaction could destabilize the region and tarnish India’s reputation on the global stage.
