Imphal: Manipur chief minister N. Biren Singh has issued a strong warning against character assassination and unlawful interference in private and family matters through social media platforms.

“Legal action will be taken against administrators of social media pages who engage in harmful practices, including inciting violence. The government is also planning sensitization programmes to educate social media administrators on responsible online conduct,” Biren said.

He warned that individuals found guilty of such activities would face strict legal consequences. He said such actions could lead to severe consequences, including suicides.

The chief minister was briefing reporters at his secretariat, here, during distribution of tracksuits to media persons.

The tracksuits, imprinted with ‘DIPR Manipur’, were distributed in honor of the media fraternity’s service during the ongoing crisis, ensuring the public receives accurate information.

He acknowledged the joint efforts of the media, civil society organization and student bodies in helping restore peace in the state.

He urged media professionals to continue their efforts by publishing diverse stories that contribute to reconciliation between the warring communities in Manipur.

Addressing the issue of vigilante justice, Biren criticized various organizations for imposing punishments or issuing verdicts without legal authority. He assured the public that the government would not tolerate such actions and would take necessary measures to uphold the rule of law.

On the ongoing threats and extortion targeting officials involved in government contract work, the chief minister expressed concern over disruptions to developmental projects. He reaffirmed that the government would not succumb to such pressures and would continue its efforts to drive the state’s progress.

Regarding recent incidents of arson and looting at legislative houses, Biren confirmed that some of the accused would be prosecuted under the National Security Act, while many others remain in judicial custody. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Manipur’s citizens.

He accused the opposition of failing to prioritize Manipur’s interests and lacking sincerity in addressing the state’s ongoing crisis.

“We want a concrete resolution to the conflict. This is not just a political issue; it’s a chronic problem created by Congress. They are the ones responsible for these issues, and now they are blaming us. Not just God, even the people won’t forgive them,” Biren said.

Commenting on recent statements made by Union minister Kiren Rijiju, Biren noted that not everyone is fully aware of the complexities of Manipur’s situation.

He emphasized that those directly handling the issue, such as Union Home minister Amit Shah, understand the ground realities.

The chief minister described Rijiju’s comments as a personal opinion and a general observation, indicating that they do not necessarily reflect the government’s stance on the matter.
