Imphal: It is doubtful if peace would return in Manipur as assured by Manipur governor when many such assurances remained impractical, said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Meghachandra after meeting with governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Wednesday.

A mass of Congress workers led by Meghachandra and other Congress leaders of the state marched towards the governor’s bungalow, here, joining the rest of Congress workers protest march to Raj Bhavan on the Adani episode and alarming Manipur issues.

“Here, in Imphal, we emphasised on the prolonged crisis in Manipur,” said Meghachandra while talking to reporters in front of Raj Bhavan gate.

“We urged the governor to act to restore peace in Manipur. In these 19 months of crisis we are borbidden to assemble for peace. People are restless, we are restless and we have no strength to see people’s woes further.”

“We told the governor that Whenever the chief minister talks for peace on a public platform, attack (by Kuki militants) start on the very next day. What is this?” Meghachandra said.

“The governor assured us to work to restore peace in Manipur. We cannot believe it. We five MLAs met him at Guwahati and appraised for the same. Still we see no peace.”

Meghachandra said they told the governor that the five Congress legislators are ready to resign.

The Home minister and Manipur chief minister in many occasions had assured to bring peace in the state, which still not happened, the Congress leader said.

CWC member Gaikhangam was among those about 15 Congress Committee members who met the governor.

The march was stopped on the way to Raj Bhavan. Pushing between the marchers and security personnel were witnessed. Congress representatives were later invited to meet the governor.

Manipur violence began on May 3 last year after Kuki-Zo people supported by armed militants launched attack on Meitei villages killing innocent people and burnt down homes.
