Imphal: The Supreme Court on Monday directed Biren Singh’s government to provide details regarding buildings burnt, looted, and encroached upon during the violence in Manipur.

The apex court sought details regarding the action taken against offenders.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar ordered the Manipur government to provide the details in a sealed cover. The bench also sought details regarding the owners of the properties.

“We also direct the state government to file the following details: buildings burnt; partially burnt; buildings which are looted; and buildings trespassed and encroached upon. In all these, give details of the name and address of the owner. The report shall also indicate the steps taken by the state government to ensure that the persons who have trespassed are proceeded against as per law,” the bench stated.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the state, submitted that the state’s first priority was to contain the violence and then to retrieve the arms and ammunition.

“We will file the details,” Mehta said.

Senior advocate Vibha Makhija, appearing for the Justice Gita Mittal panel appointed by the apex court to monitor rehabilitation in the state, highlighted that blockades were affecting the recovery process.

Mehta said there were circumstances in the state that should be dealt with without aggression.

The bench also sought details of weapons seized by security forces.

The apex court will next hear the case in January.

The court,  in August last year, had ordered the setting up of a committee of three former women high court judges to oversee relief and rehabilitation of victims and compensation to them, besides asking former Maharashtra police chief Dattatray Padsalgikar to monitor the probe in criminal cases.
