Imphal: On the eighth day of the protest demanding to trace a man who went missing at Leimakhong Army Camp, people blocked Indian Army vehicles from entering or exiting the 57 Mountain Division in Leimakhong, on Tuesday.
In frustration over the failure to trace 56-year-old Laishram Kamalbabu, protesters burned an effigy of Major General S.S. Karthikeya, GOC of the 57 Mountain Division, at Kanto Sabal, Imphal West.
“I am protesting with hope that my husband will be safely handed over to me,” said Belarani Singha, wife of the missing Kamalbabu.
Kamalbabu disappeared on November 25 inside the 57 Mountain Division GOC Leimakhong army camp.
Since November 25, people have been demonstrating at Kanto Sabal, Imphal West, an adjacent village to Leimakhong demanding Kamalbabu’s rescue from the hands of those involved in letting his missing.
Belarani said, “I have been demonstrating for three days for my husband’s return. I urge the Manipur and Assam governments to ensure his rescue.”
“Since the day I received the information of my husband’s disappearance, it feels like I am living in a coma. I came here alone to find him.”
Kamalbabu, a resident of Gossaipur in Assam’s Cachar district, was staying at Loitang Khunou village in Imphal West for work. He has been working at the Leimakhong Army Camp leaving his family in Assam.
Women protesters burned an effigy of Major General S.S. Karthikeya in the late afternoon. The demonstrators chanted slogans “Down, down 57 Mountain Division!”
A division bench of the High Court of Manipur, led by the Chief Justice, on Tuesday ordered the state to form a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kamalbabu’s disappearance.
Laishram Brajabidu, the younger brother of the missing man, filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court of Manipur on November 27. He raised suspicions that his brother had been kidnapped by Kuki militants from the high-security zone of the Leimakhong Army camp.
